About Wild Style

What We Cover

Wild Style Magazine helps you plan your next yard project and protect your budget. We show you how to measure materials so you can build exactly what you want. Should you pour concrete or lay pavers? We give you the plain facts and costs to help you decide.

Our articles cover the major structures and spaces outside your doors. We publish detailed guides on Garden Design, Patios and Pergolas, and Roofing. You will also find material lists for Driveways and Paving, Deck Building, and Outdoor Kitchens. Every guide helps you figure out what to buy and where to start.

Who Writes The Articles

Our writers use pen names to share project plans and building steps. Reuben Stillwagon writes our guides on roofing, deck building, and driveways and paving. He tells you exactly how many bags of concrete or bundles of shingles you need for a standard job.

Sybil Rademaker handles garden design and backyard layouts. She helps you map out planting zones and figure out exactly how to space your raised garden beds. Rory Sundquist covers patios and pergolas, along with outdoor kitchens. He focuses on the footprint and framing of your gathering spaces.

You will see Rory Sundquist break down the costs of brick pavers, stainless steel grills and rough-sawn lumber. They write to answer the questions you have while standing in the dirt.

Planning Your Yard

Every outdoor project starts with measuring your space and pricing your materials. A new treated pine deck might cost 25 dollars a square foot. A simple gravel driveway is much cheaper. Take a tape measure outside and sketch out your ideas so you know what to expect.

Once you have a plan, check the rules for your town. Your local building department will tell you if you need a permit for that new outdoor kitchen. They check your property lines and frost line depth. A footing often needs to sit 48 inches deep so it stays steady at 32 °F.
